A new design patent spotted on the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) website reveals sketches of what looks like a flip-style foldable smartphone featuring a square-shaped rear camera layout. While Samsung hasn’t officially commented on this, the patent drawings offer some interesting hints about a potential future Galaxy Flip device.
Samsung’s New Flip-Style Foldable Smartphone
If we go by the sketches, the most noticeable design change is a square-shaped camera layout positioned at the top right of the back panel. The camera module appears clean and symmetrical, suggesting that Samsung may be experimenting with a refreshed rear design to differentiate itself from previous Flip models.
The drawings show a clamshell-style folding device, consistent with Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip series. There’s a clear horizontal fold line through the middle of the device, and the overall shape remains compact with rounded corners and a flat front screen. The buttons appear to be placed on the right side, while the top and bottom views show what may be a USB-C port and speaker grills.
Figures 10 through 12 give us a look at the internal folding mechanism from a cross-sectional view. These technical illustrations hint at a hinge system that supports full, partial, and folded states. It appears that Samsung is focusing on the structural integrity of the foldable screen, possibly to enhance durability or minimize crease visibility.
Enlarged close-ups (Figure 8 and Figure 9) highlight the square module in more detail, showing that this isn’t just a camera bump; it may also include other sensors or components. However, without internal views of the module itself, this remains speculative.
It’s Just a Patent, Not a Product
As always with patents, it’s important to remember that this is only a conceptual design. Companies like Samsung regularly file numerous patents, and not all of them are incorporated into consumer-ready devices. There’s no confirmation from Samsung about this particular design, and there’s no guarantee that it will turn into an actual product. But if this does become reality, it could mark a fresh take on the company’s popular Flip lineup.
