YouTube seems bullish about expanding its subscription plans to include new and interesting tiers. According to reports, the company is now testing a two-person membership. The initial test has been going on for select users in India, Taiwan, France, and Hong Kong. Read on to know the complete details on this new plan, and whether they are even worth considering.
YouTube is Conducting a Trial of a Two-person Premium Membership Plan
The team at MoneyControl first disclosed the information regarding YouTube experimenting with a new two-person Premium plan. The report further adds that this move has been undertaken in hopes of finding other revenue-generating avenues besides advertisements.
The new membership plan will be available for a monthly fee of Rs 219. However, folks must meet certain conditions to avail of this new tier:
- Both members must be aged 13 years or older.
- They should have a valid Google account.
- They should belong to the same Google family group.
Is the YouTube Two-person Membership Plan Worth It?
Let’s understand the YouTube Premium plan before addressing the elephant in the room. India was first introduced to this service in 2019. It was launched to let people enjoy watching any video without dealing with advertisements. As a bonus, users can download videos to watch offline and play them in the background. Moreover, they get access to YouTube Music, which enables them to listen to several songs on repeat.
YouTube currently has three membership plans: an individual tier at Rs 149, a family tier at Rs 299, and a student plan at Rs 89.

On the surface, it offers a better value than the individual plan because two people will pay less to use this service on the individual level compared to each subscribing to it separately. Moreover, people may consider it a cheaper alternative to the family plan.
However, if we divide the two-person plan’s monthly pricing per head, each person has to bear Rs 109.5. Conversely, an individual has to pay Rs 49.8 per head if they have opted for the family plan with five of their closest friends/family members. Whether you pick the Two-person membership plan or the family plan, you get access to the same service. Be that as it may, the cheapest YouTube Premium plan continues to be the one for students.
In addition to YouTube, Spotify offers similar membership plans. If you are interested in knowing the price comparison between the two, you can take a look at the table below:
Plans | Student | Individual | Two-person | Family |
YouTube | Rs 89 | Rs 149 | Rs 219 | Rs 299 |
Spotify | Rs 59 | Rs 119 | Rs 149 | Rs 179 |
At the end of the day, whichever plan you choose, the key is to pick the one that best fits your viewing habits and budget — so you can enjoy your favourite content without overpaying.
